Absolutely loved my experience at Letra house! They were more than flexible to cater to a last minute booking change which we really appreciated. The food and service on the night was really good. We got the $95 pp set menu but all wished there was an extra protein/ main on there before dessert, but all in all they also were flexible in modifying the menu to suit our tableās tastes. I really wanted to try the scampi tostada so the chef was happy to include that in our set menu for the night. Would definitely come back for their a la carte and would definitely recommend dining here.
Had a lovely dinner here with friends. We had tapas style dishes with lots of drinksāgorgeous wines and solid cocktails. We werenāt very hungry so didnāt order much; thankfully their menu is suitable for small appetites. We ordered the croquettes, duck parfait, a prawn and tomato dish, the potato tortilla, anchovy donut, and a cheese platter. All were quite good but found the flavours a bit unusual and divisive. I personally enjoyed the potato tortilla, but itās quite rich and not everyone loved it. The cheeses were wonderful; delicious firm and soft cheeses came out with fruit paste, with a memorable, super ripe brie, oozy and zinging with activity (again, divisive, but I loved it). Alongside was a lovely blue cheese, not too full-frontal with funk so appealing for all palates. There was a generous serving of jamon as well, though it wasnāt very popular as it had a slightly chemical taste (not actual chemicals but just something about the flavour). Finally, they kindly provided a gluten-free crispbread that was surprisingly good. Drinks were all solid, with martinis served with huge, luscious olives. The wine menu is stellar and we enjoyed what was recommended to us. Staff were friendly if you wanted them to be, it seemed they played off whatever energy you put out so are a bit stiff at first. Atmosphere is what youād expect for an underground bar, moody and dark but not too sacred for more casual meals. Overall, a good experience and Iād like to come back to try their mains, plus their late night menu. Our friend who had been before said they had made tweaks to the menu and it was better before, but I still enjoyed it! I think with all new restaurants, there will be a teething period before finding their stride. Iām sure Letra House will find theirs soon.
Letra House is in the basement of its Love Tilly Group sibling, Palazzo Salato. You enter through a not-particularly-high-heel-friendly cobblestoned archway in Kent Streetās wine bar district. Basements are not the most salubrious of spaces, but, if youāre familiar with this hospitality group, youāll know itās the atmosphere they create within their venues that keeps people returning. Besides, the cellarās exposed brick archways, accentuated with dark timbers and moody lighting do work thematically for a Spanish-influenced, late-night, wine bar. While the global wine listāstrongest in red with all wines available by the glassāis their main game, the short cocktail list sparks joy. Four Pillars Gin Olive Leaf Gin shows seductive oily viscosity in the Letra martini ($25), and peaty Laphroaig holds its own against Gospel Rye and a scintilla of honey in Smokinā Quincy Jones ($25). Our food selectionsāplucked from a single-page menu arranged into bites, smalls, and largesāare quick to arrive: faster than our drinks in fact. We begin with lewd pink whorls of duck liver parfait and pickled rhubarb in brandy snap baskets ($9/each). The anchovy doughnut ($9/each) arrives without its companion for our table of two, but is taken off the bill. With manchego custard below and an anchovy topper, it reads better than it eats. The oilās a bit strong, and the darkness of the upmarket deep-frying loses the cheesy custard. House-made condimentsāapricots in fino sherry and roast cherry mustardāwork well in tandem on the duck, pork, lamb and pistachio terrine ($24). Socarrat ($36) serves the usually crisp rice crust from the bottom of the paella pan under firefly squid, broad beans and garlic. It made the rice crust a bit soggy, and the dish had a very fishy flavour, but I liked eating it regardless.
Went to Letra House with a group of friends and we had a fantastic night. Because we were a large group we went with the set menu, there was lots of food on the table (which is great) but I think if we were smaller we might have preferred ordering Ć la carte to pick favourites. The food was very good and the drinks menu and wine list were on point, which made the five hours we spent there fly by. Loved that itās open late in the CBD, perfect for a long catch-up.
Letra house has been making the rounds on social media for good reason. The restaurant is very cool with a cozy but funky vibe. Quite small tables and since the space is small it can be a bit loud at times. I would not recommend large groups (5+) for the best experience. Service was top notch! Lovely and great, always happy to give recs :) Now the food- very interesting flavours and textures! Alot of dishes were delicious but had a different take from what I expected. If you are keen to try something new and interesting you def should try this restaurant! Top picks: duck parfait, the snails main and the custard dessert!
